Casey Viator, still a teenager, wins the 1971 AAU Mr America, becoming the youngest ever to achieve this great honor. His victory was dominate. He would finish 27 points clear of his nearest rival, the very capable Pete Grymkowski. He would also win the Most Muscular, Best Arms, Best Back, Best Chest and Best Legs awards.
Mike Mentzer also competed, this being his first major competition, he would finish a credible 10th. Mike would finish 2nd to Casey in the Best Arms and Best Legs subdivision awards.
