1984 MISS OLYMPIA
24 NOVEMBER 1984
Female bodybuilding was starting to move in a different direction. Cory Everson would win the FIRST of SIX Miss Olympia crowns (1984 – 89) in an undefeated career spanning from 1981 to 1989. She had a level of combined conditioning and symmetry that outshone her competition.
Rachel McLish, a former 2 time winner, would finish second. She transformed her physique to remain competitive with the shift in judging expectations. She was significantly leaner and more muscular than previous years. Her face was drawn and most likely a product of extreme dieting. It was a departure from her usual shapely and femininely pleasing look. This would be her last competition and a new era of female bodybuilding was on the horizon.
Mary Roberts was third. She was massive and packed a large amount of muscle on her frame. Probably a touch too much. She would go on to finish 2nd to Cory Everson in the 1985 competition.
For me the highlight of the show was 7th place finisher GLADYS PORTUGUES. She may have presented what I believe is the most attractively developed women’s physique to ever grace the Miss Olympia Stage.
