Gary Leonard had made a significant impact on bodybuilding in his first two years of competition. He won the AAU Jr Mr USA, the AAU Jr Mr America and his class at the 1979 AAU Mr America. In 1980 Gary had his sights set on 3 competitions. The AAU Mr California, the AAU Mr America the IFBB Mr Universe. He would finish 3rd to Rory Leidelmeyer (Mr California), win the AAU Mr America and finish 6th in his class at the Mr Universe behind Herbert Mutz.
